Built between 1875 and 1899 by Father Peter Tran Luc (Cha Sáu), Phat Diem Cathedral is a one-of-a-kind architectural marvel combining European cathedral scale with traditional Vietnamese communal-house curved roofs and monolithic stone carvings.
Located in Kim Son district in southern Ninh Binh, Phat Diem is often called the "Ecclesiastical Capital of Vietnam". Instead of western spires, its bell tower (Phuong Dinh) rises like a three-tiered royal pavilion with upturned dragon eaves and houses a 2-ton bronze bell.
Inside the Great Cathedral, 52 massive pillars hewn from whole ironwood (gỗ lim) trees support a soaring vaulted ceiling, while the adjacent Heart of Mary Chapel (Nhà thờ Trái Tim Đức Mẹ) is built entirely of hand-carved marble and Ninh Binh green stone.
